With the release of Atlas 5.0 there are now many more display options for In Focus webparts. There are combinations of layouts and styles that are compatible and some that are not. For those that are compatible there is of course a grey area of personal choice as to whether the choices look good with the content you are displaying.
This article is a summary and showcase of all the layouts and styles. For detailed configuration options please see this supporting article: Configuration options for Layouts and Item Styles
In this article:
Layouts
Layouts now refer only to how the items are laid out, not how the individual items look within that layout. The layout options available are these three:
Item Styles now refer to how the items look individually. New styles may be added ocasionally via Atlas updates. Not all styles are available in all layouts.
The Carousel layout uses a horizontal row of items which can automatically scroll through. So you may see 3 items at a time, but the items will be rotated through if there are more than 3 to show.
The Grid layout uses the horizontal and vertical space to show as many items per page as specified. Usually we recommend 12 or 24 items per page for this as those are divisble by 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 so it will look good on any screen size.
The Vertical Stack only allows styles which look good when stacked vertically. Mostly used for FAQs, Useful Links etc. that are often displayed in a narrow column on the page.
Which Item Styles are available for which Layouts?
For the Carousel layout, the following styles can be used:
For the Grid layout the following styles can be used:
For the Vertical Stack layout the following styles can be used:
Item Styles
Below we will describe all the Item Styles available. You can see which layouts they are available for in the previous section above.
Cards
This style works well within the Carousel Layout, giving good looking, compact cards with imagery and some information that scrolls through the carousel.
Hero

On homepages this is a great choice which can give specific content a very prominent positioning on the page to draw attention. It may be less appealing outside of the Homepage or Landing Pages due to the size of the web part. You can set this style to show 1 or 2 items, and the vertical size can be controlled. The example above is using the smallest vertical size.
People
Please view the dedicated article for the People Directory layout here
People Results should only be shown using the People Item Style in the vast majority of cases because it is configured to show profile-specific properties such as the Job Title, Department and Profile Picture. When you hover over the Profile Picture you will see the out of the box Microsoft Profile Card from which you can get further profile information:
In the Spotlight

This is the default Item Style for Spotlights but you could use it for other content types too. These are similar to Cards and Visual Cards but have their own unique look and feel with the vertical image slice.
Visual Cards
Please view the dedicated article on Visual cards here
Visual Cards are the most customisable of the basic card options. You can turn many of the visual elements on or off including the card borders, type label, context menu etc.
Flip Cards
For more information on Flip Cards please view this dedicated article
Flip Cards are a great choice for documents because you can display the content in a very visual way incorporating the document preview as the background, but when the user hovers their mouse over the card it flips to reveal the detailed metadata.
Simple List
Simple List only shows the thumbnail and title of each item. In a Vertical Stack each item will be as wide as the page section you add it to, whereas in a Grid each item will be shortened like the image above.
Details List
The Details List by default shows the File Type icon, Title, Created date and Summary of each item in a table as above. You can customise this style by changing the columns, and you can choose whether or not the column headings are displayed.
Accordion
The Accordion style is really only used for FAQs. When collapsed, only the question is shown, but when expanded the full answer can be shown which can include formatted text and links to supporting documentation.
Properties List
This style allows you to set up a number of sections and choose the item properties to be shown in each section. Above you can see two examples with different configuration pulling in different item fields. This allows you to have a completely bespoke set of card properties, though it is lacking in the visual appeal of other styles.
This is probably the most complex style to configure, so we have a dedicated guide to help you configure this to show the data you need: Configuring the "Properties List" Item Style for In Focus
