The "In Focus Filters" web part in Atlas can be added to a page and linked to an In Focus web part to allow the end user to refine the In Focus results within the current page. This can be combined with filtering configured by the editor in the In Focus web part itself, but the end user will only be able to filter within those results using the In Focus Filters.
This article is for Atlas 5.0 and later. If you are on a version ealier than 5.0 please refer to the old version of this article: In Focus Filters web part

Before configuration
Before trying to configure, make sure you have added the most relevant Filters web part for the type of content you will be showing. For example, if you want to show Documents you should use the named Documents Filters web part because it has a default configuration showing refiners relevant to Documents. The full list of In Focus Filters web parts available are as follows:
- In Focus Filters (not pre-configured for specific types of content)
- Communication In Focus Filters
- Documents Filters
- Email Filters
- Events Filters
- External Insights Filters
- FAQs Filters
- Ideas Filters
- Knowledge In Focus Filters
- Knowledge Pages Filters
- Landing Pages Filters
- Learning Units Filters (only used in the Learning & Development centre at this time)
- Location Pages Filters
- News Filters
- People Directory Filters
- Spotlights Filters
If your content is suitable, using one of the above web parts will save you a lot of configuration time.
To change the configuration for the web part, select it while editing the page and click the pencil icon just to the left of the web part. This will open the configuration panel on the right side of the page.
There are four configuration sections for In Focus Filters web parts; Connections, Filter settings, Layout and Import/Export settings.
Connections
Under Connections we have the folowing settings available:
In the dropdown you should select the In Focus Results web part that you want to be able to apply filters to. If you are using In Focus Verticals with that results web part, you should toggle the connection to Verticals web part, then select the Verticals web part associated with your Results.

Edit refiners
You can choose which refiners are available by clicking the Edit refiners button. Editing refiners does require some background information and should not be attempted without reference to the following article which explains how to refer to each Atlas column using its Managed Property: Atlas Managed Properties for Search
Clicking Edit refiners will open a panel from the right side of the screen which shows the default configuration for the web part. The default configuration will depend on which In Focus Filters web part you have added. Some example refiners are shown below:
Remove refiners
To remove a refiner, scroll to the far right side of the panel and click the X next to the refiner you wish to remove:
Add refiners
Each refiner is referred to by its Managed Property which can be looked up in the article linked above, so to add a refiner you need to set the value in the Filter managed property column to the correct Managed Property.
- To add a refiner, look below the current refiners at the grey bar. On the left, click the Edit button and set the label for the refiner (1):
- Now click into the dropdown for the Filter managed property (2) and select the desired Managed Property. If the dropdown is greyed out please ensure you already set the Connections for the web part as this is required to choose a property.
- Next choose the Refiner template (3) - if you aren't sure which one to use have a look at similar refiners.
- Check the box (4) if you need to allow selection of multiple values in this filter
- Select the operator (5) to use between multiple selected values in the same filter (AND or OR)
- Choose the Refiner sort type (6) - either "By count" or "By name"
- Choose the Sort order (7)- ascending or descending
- Finally we have two checkboxes for certain behaviours - "Expand filter by default" (8) and "Show filter for refinement values" (9) - generally these can be left turned off.
Once you have configured your new refiner(s) scroll down below the refiners table in the panel and click Add and save at the bottom:
If you only have the option to Save then you are not adding your new refiner. In this case ensure you set all necessary parts of the configuration until the button updates to say Add and save. You need to check the refiner name, managed property and template at a minimum to add your new refiner.
Layout
Under Layout you can configure how the refiners will be presented on the page. You have the following options:
- You can choose whether to show the web part if there are no results (Show blank if no result)
- You can choose the Layout for the filters - Vertical, Horizontal or Panel. You can choose whichever fits best within the layout of the page. Debug and Custom should not be selected for general use so you can ignore these.
- The Edit filters template is for custom templates created by your own developers, but please note we plan to remove this from the standard functionality in an upcoming version. Therefore if you think you need to use this please consider discussing this with your ClearPeople CSM.
There are also specific settings for the Panel layout allowing you to configure the button text, panel header text and some behaviours for the panel itself:
Import/Export settings
