To assist our customers in extending Atlas content types for custom scenarios we have added a tool inside the Atlas Configuration workspace to help ensure these extensions are handled correctly. The tool simply creates your new content types as extensions of the Atlas content types (or clones of your existing custom content types) to ensure the relationship is created correctly, but adding or removing columns etc. will still need to be done via the OOTB SharePoint content type settings.
Please note that you will need to be an Atlas Administrator to perform these steps.
There are two actions available; Create a content type and Clone a content type:
Access the Content Type Extensions page
- Navigate to the Atlas Configuration workspace. This workspace can be found by searching for "configuration" in Atlas ConneX, or by manually navigating to the site at /sites/atlasconfiguration in your M365 tenant.
- Go to Site contents in the top right menu:
- Click on the Site Pages library (at the bottom of the Site contents list) to open it, find the page content-type-extension-tool.aspx and open the page.
Create a new content type
- From the Content Type Extensions page, click the Action dropdown and choose Create new Content Type:
- You will now see some new fields:
- In the first, open the dropdown and select the Atlas Content Type you want to inherit from. If you are unsure which to choose, please feel free to ask your Project team or Support team for advice. However here are some quick tips:
- For a document-based content type generally you would choose File Item as the source
- For a page-based content type generally you would choose Site Page Atlas or Knowledge Page as the source
- If your content is not really aligned to any Atlas Content Type you could use the basic Item Atlas as the source which includes just Title and the five Atlas Global Taxonomies.
- Next, add a Name and Description for your new content type. Once you're happy with these choices click the Create content type button. After a few moments, you will see a similar message to the following:
- Your content type has now been created and you can go and make any required changes.
Clone a content type
You can only clone content types which you already created as extensions of Atlas content types, and they are only cloned into one workspace at a time. In my test environment I see the following in this list, but you will see an empty or different list depending on your previous content type configuration:
Once you have chosen the custom content type to be cloned, you will see the name and ID of the content type displayed:
Simply paste the URL of the workspace you want to clone the content type to, then click the Clone content type button:
You will see a spinner for a few seconds, then you should get a message to confirm the cloning is complete:
