Atlas comes with a set of AI features that make use of the OpenAI service provided by Microsoft in Azure.
In the related articles, we explain how to enable the Azure OpenAI service in your Azure subscription and how to create the service manually.
During the creation of the Azure OpenAI service, as with any other resource in Azure, you must select the region where you would like to create the Azure OpenAI service in your subscription.
Currently, Azure OpenAI is limited to a subset of regions for you to create this service. Besides, only in some of those regions will you be able to create the AI models required for Atlas to work and show you the AI features that come along with them.
Atlas AI, in Atlas 6.0, uses the next sets of models to work with Azure OpenAI:
- text-embedding-3-large
- gpt-4o
- gpt-4o-mini
Within each set of models, there is usually also a subset of available versions, and while the "Embeddings" models have all their versions available for all the regions where you can create them, the set of GPT-4o models does not have all their versions available for all the regions where you can create them.
Atlas 6.0 uses the model GPT-4o in its version "2024-08-06" and GPT-4o-mini in its version "2024-07-18", and these versions are not available for all the regions where you can create GPT-4o models, and also not for all Deployment Types.
There are different variations of the available regions depending on the model, its version, and the Deployment Type. However, Microsoft keeps an up-to-date document where they maintain a list of the regions where GPT-4o and GPT-4o-mini versions, among others, are available for you to create within your Azure OpenAI service.
This is the official document from Microsoft where you can see this list (see the example screenshot below): https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/ai-services/openai/concepts/models#model-summary-table-and-region-availability
Note: The above screenshots are examples, and the contents may vary since Microsoft is constantly working on extending its availability to more regions as well as providing newer versions of the models available.
The screenshots above are examples of the selection you must make when reviewing which region fits best with what your company needs. You must choose a region with these characteristics:
- text-embedding-3-large
- gpt-4o (2024-08-06) and gpt4o-mini (2024-07-18)
Because of different legal terms like being compliant with the GDPR and other legal regulations that may affect your company, you may want to create this resource in the regions that better fit your company's needs. For this reason, it is important that you choose a region that suits your company requirements, but it is also mandatory to choose one of the regions that meet the requirements of the above list; otherwise, the Azure OpenAI service that you create in your Azure subscription will not be compatible with any of the AI features provided by Atlas.
As an example, taking into account the above screenshot and the requirements of Atlas AI, if your company is sitting in Europe, you might want to choose "Sweden Central" as the region where you will create Azure OpenAI.
Once you make your decision, take note of the region of your choice because you will be using this information when creating the Azure OpenAI resource in your Azure subscription.
NOTE: There is an exception to the above requirements, and this is if, instead of creating a new Azure OpenAI resource, you are thinking of using an existing Azure OpenAI service you already had in your Azure subscription that was used for other purposes (not Atlas) in your company. In this case, it is recommended to review it manually from within the Azure portal by accessing your service, because the models required by Atlas AI might not be available in your current Azure OpenAI implementation (the related optional article to create the service manually may help with this reviewing task).
