This article describes the limits and behaviour for the two different menu types; Hover and Mega menu. You can see how to swap between the menu types here: Change the Global Navigation Layout
Each item on the Global Navigation is security trimmed by default so that users do not see links which they do not have access to and would otherwise lead them to an "Access Denied" screen. This can be turned off from the Tenant Properties area, but it is not recommended.
In this article:
Hover Menu
The Hover Menu can be configured with up to five total levels, four of which sit beneath the top level items which are always visible. This helps users understand the scope of Atlas, taking a deep dive into the available sections and content without leaving the current page.
In the event that more than the configured number of items are supposed to appear in a level a scroll bar will be added to allow access to all items. You can configure the number of rows shown without a scroll bar. See: Configure the number of rows in the Hover Menu
In terms of character limits, the limit on the top level is over 100 characters, but we don't recommend going anywhere close to the limit as this will take up way too much screen space. The limit on the levels below is not really a character limit so much as a limit on the available space - link text can only be as long as the area available, and will not wrap to a second line.
Any Headings created with a link behind them will show their dropdown on hover on desktop, while on Mobile they will have an arrow next to them which can be tapped to reveal the links underneath.
In the event that the items in the first level take up more horizontal space than available on the user’s screen on desktop they will be hidden below an ellipsis on the right, and the dropdown part of the Hover Menu will adjust to put the hidden items in first column. The other columns will be moved to the right, restricting the fourth level to a single column of seven items before a scrollbar appears.
Mega Menu
The Hover Menu can be configured with up to three total levels, two of which sit beneath the top level items which are always visible. The items will be centered within the available area.
You cannot configure the overall size of the Mega menu because it simply grows as needed based on the items being displayed. If you have more 2nd-level headings than can be displayed on one row, they will move down to the next row.
In terms of character limits, there are some things to note here:
- The limit on the top level is over 100 characters, but we don't recommend going anywhere close to the limit as this item will take up way too much screen space
- The limit on the second level is approximately 57 characters after which the text will be cut off and an ellipsis (...) added. The text can wrap once onto a second line, but no more.
- The limit on the second level is approximately 67 characters after which the text will be cut off and an ellipsis (...) added. The text can wrap once onto a second line, but no more.
Please understand that these are approximations and depending on the specific characters, number of spaces etc. there will be some variation here.
