This article will provide a holistic overview of Atlas's In Focus web parts. If you want granular information on the different configuration settings, please read this article here - Configuration for In Focus web parts.
The In Focus web part allows you to pull a variety of Atlas content into your page dynamically. Content shown in the In Focus web part can be refined by the user using the In Focus Filters web part, otherwise it will show all relevant content unfiltered. Below you can see a page configured with an In Focus web part, In Focus Verticals, In Focus Filters web part and In Focus Search Box web part connected together:
For most types of content, each item returned in the web part displays a card with an image, title, date and a small banner noting the type of content, e.g. News, Events, Knowledge, although there are a number of other layouts that can be used such as Accordion which is used for FAQs.
To view an item or article from an In Focus web part you can usually just click anywhere on the item to navigate to it. Additionally, cards include a "quick actions" menu giving quick access to the source library and more.
Depending on your Atlas version you will have access to additional layouts such as "Hero Carousel", "In the Spotlight" and "Visual Tiles" which are described in the relevant section. We continue to add layouts as needed as we develop the product. From Atlas 5.0 onwards the visuals for the web part have been updated to include rounded corners and even more configuration options.

Pre-configured In Focus Filters web parts
You can pair any In Focus Filters web part with any In Focus web part to filter the results, but you generally want to use the In Focus Filters web part that best matches the content you will show. So if you'll be showing Documents, add the Documents In Focus Filters web part.

Layouts for In Focus web parts
The following article provides more information and visual examples of the available layouts and styles:
Placeholder Imagery for In Focus tiles
The imagery or preview for each tile is determined by the content being returned. Pages, Events, External Insights and Spotlights will show the thumbnail or main page image used in that content. Documents supported by M365 (Office, PDF, Email) will show a preview of the document.
For content where the image cannot be loaded for some reason or does not exist, the image will be replaced with a placeholder, for example:
Where content is not assigned an Atlas content type, the "unknown type" imagery will be used:
Change placeholder imagery
To change these default and unknown type images, you'll need at least Member permissions to the Atlas Configuration workspace.
- Go to the Atlas Configuration workspace
- Click Atlas Assets in the left-hand navigation menu
- Open the Placeholders folder
- Check out the image you want to replace
- Upload your replacement image with the same filename and overwrite the existing image
- Publish the image.
Additional configuration
If the pre-configured web parts do not meet your specific requirement you can either apply additional configuration from the following section to meet your requirement, or instead add the basic In Focus and In Focus Filters web parts and configure them as needed.
Below is a quick summary of the configuration available, but for a full explanation of all options, please see the full article here depending on your Atlas version:
- Configuration for In Focus web parts (Atlas 5.0+)
- Configuration for In Focus web parts (Atlas 4.0 to 4.3)
Quick Add It
Any In Focus web part can be configured with Quick Add It to allow content to be added directly from the web part without leaving the current page. Learn more: Quick Add It
What makes In Focus Dynamic? Static vs. Dynamic web parts
In focus web parts are dynamic, meaning they are search based, pulling results directly from Search depending on queries, result sources (types or groups of contents) and permissions. They will by default automatically pull content into the web part to show based on the tagging of the page they sit on. Permissions are also taken into account so users will not see what they do not have access to. This means users will have differing views of what is shown in the web part depending on their permissions to content. In Focus also shows a live view upon page refresh, so every day there could be new content pulled into the web part to be shown. Dynamic web parts do not show links but the actual content itself – through a search going on behind the scenes, so if you delete a document – it will no longer show up within an in focus dynamic web part - this means no inactive or broken links, and no link management.
This differs from ’static’ web parts where you have to stipulate the content via a link or selection, meaning the content is fixed and does not update automatically and isn’t ‘live’. If the content behind the link is moved or deleted, the link will not work, but the content will still be there. Mandatory Reads, Call to Action, HoverPoint and Quick Poll web parts are static Atlas web parts, meaning the content shown here is not automated in any way, and must be manually configured to show content via links. This is the same with most Microsoft web parts.
How page details determine dynamic results
Pages are a means to visualize content on a given page (including the home landing pages of workspaces) where web parts are using to build user experiences, usually towards a certain area, location, subject or topic. Pages are the standard means to display and present content within SharePoint.
These pages can be tagged with properties (metadata selections inside columns assigned to the page content types) to help best describe them. These page tags are displayed within page details, or in the columns in the Page Library. Atlas uses the following main term sets:
- Activity
- Department
- Entity
- Location
- Subject
If an Atlas page with an In Focus results web part has one (or more) of the above terms applied, then content that has been tagged with these terms will display.
For example, the following page details has tag Entity = Kitsune Holdings:
This means that an In Focus results web part on this page will automatically (dynamically) display any content (regardless of which Atlas workspace it was created in) tagged with Entity = Kitsune Holdings. Any matching tags against pieces of content can then appear dynamically against this page.
The more tags you assign, the more specific the search criteria the in focus web parts on that page is leveraging.
