The Mandatory Reads web part shows the visiting user specific documents flagged by the organisation for them to read:
If there are multiple documents to read you can page between them using the arrows in the top right. Each document can be read without leaving the current page by clicking Read and Confirm to open the document in a modal window. Once the document has been read users can click to confirm that they have read it and this is recorded in their SharePoint user profile.

Configuration options (all versions)
When editing a page this web part can be configured with the following options:
- The first field lets you change the title of the web part shown on the page
- The second field lets you change the description [not currently shown so can be ignored]
- The third option lets you set the maximum number of items to display in the carousel
- The final option lets you set visibility of the web part if there are no items to show to the user currently viewing the page.
Additional Configuration options (Atlas 5.4+)
In Atlas 5.4 we have enhanced the functionality of this web part, a summary can be found here: Enhancements to Mandatory Reads (Atlas 5.4+)
The new full set of options is as follows:
- Changing the title has been moved - this is now done from the web part where it sits on the page rather than in the config panel.
-
Apply metadata filters will make the web part behave like an In Focus, where only Mandatory Read tasks tagged with the same tags as the page will be shown.
-
- Although the mandatory reads are now dynamic (Search based) it's different to the normal In Focus web part configuration, as you cannot put a manual KQL query in so it's not quite as flexible. As such, we advise that it might be useful to have a dedicated term for mandatory reads to help with tagging mandatory reads and then tagging the page you would like the mandatory read to appear on. Tags such as 'mandatory reading' or 'mandatory learning' might be good suggestions. Other tags will need to match on the page as per the normal Atlas tagging & taxonomy guidance.
-
- Limit scope to this workspace means regardless of whether metadata filters are applied you can only see tasks from the current workspace.
- Hide confirmed documents means that a user will no longer see their completed tasks. This may be desired to keep things clean, but it does also mean the user may not be able to easily find the document if they want to read it again.
Additionally, the Import/Export configuration functionality has been updated to ensure the new options are accounted for - note that previously exported configurations may need to be recreated.
Add Mandatory Read Tasks
Mandatory Read documents can be created from Add It by following the guide here:
Edit or Delete existing Mandatory Read Tasks
To Edit or Delete Atlas content please check this article: Edit or Delete Atlas content
Mandatory Read Tasks have an Expiration Date, so if you prefer not delete them you can also simply have them hide automatically based on the Expiration Date.
Reporting
Via a Script
You can create a report of your Mandatory Read Tasks showing who has read each document. To learn how to create such a report please refer to the linked article: Mandatory Reads Report script
Inside Atlas
We're bringing this functionality inside the Atlas UI so that content owners and editors can quickly view who has read each mandatory read via a spreadsheet. You can read about the new Mandatory Read Reporting capabilities in this article.
