The "In Focus Filters" web part in Atlas can be added to a page and linked to an In Focus web part to allow the end user to refine the In Focus results within the current page. This can be combined with filtering configured by the editor in the In Focus web part itself, but the end user will only be able to filter within those results using the In Focus Filters.
This article is for Atlas versions earlier than 5.0. If you are on 5.0 or later please refer to the new version of this article: In Focus Filters web part (Atlas 5.0+)

Configuration
Before trying to configure, make sure you have added the most relevant Filters web part for the type of content you will be showing. For example, if you want to show Documents you should use the named Documents Filters web part because it has a default configuration showing refiners relevant to Documents. The full list of In Focus Filters web parts available are as follows:
- In Focus Filters (not pre-configured for specific types of content)
- Communication In Focus Filters
- Documents Filters
- Events Filters
- External Insights Filters
- Knowledge In Focus Filters
- Knowledge Pages Filters
- Landing Pages Filters
- Location Pages Filters
- News Filters
- People Directory Filters
- Spotlights Filters
If your content is suitable, using one of the above web parts will save you a lot of time configuring.
To change the configuration for the web part, select it while editing the page and click the pencil icon just to the left of the web part. This will open the configuration panel on the right side of the page.
There are two configuration sections for In Focus Filters web parts; Refiner settings and Styling options.
Refiner settings
Connect to a web part
Although this is the second option, you should actually configure it first so that you can test your settings. In the Connect to search results Web Part dropdown choose the specific In Focus web part on your page that will be affected by these refiners. If you only have one In Focus web part there should only be one option, otherwise choose the one you want to connect to.
Edit refiners
Now you can choose which refiners are available by clicking the Edit refiners button. Editing refiners does require some background information and should not be attempted without reference to the following article which explains how to refer to each Atlas column using its Managed Property: Atlas 2.X - Managed Properties for Search
Clicking Edit refiners will open a panel from the right side of the screen which shows the default configuration for the web part. The default configuration will depend on which In Focus Filters web part you have added. The example refiners below are defaults on the Documents Filters web part:
Change refiners
Each refiner is referred to by its Managed Property which can be looked up in the article linked above, so to change a refiner to use a different Atlas column you need to change the value in the Filter managed property column to the correct Managed Property, then click Edit next to the Filter name to display and update it to the name of the new column.
Remove refiners
To remove a refiner, scroll to the far right side of the panel and click the X next to the refiner you wish to remove:
Add refiners
To add a refiner, look below the current refiners at the grey bar, then on the left click into the dropdown for the Filter managed property and select the Managed Property. Again these can be found in the linked article: Atlas 2.X - Managed Properties for Search
Next you can set configuration for the new refiner:
- Click Edit and enter the display name you want to show for the refiner
- Choose the Refiner template - if you aren't sure which one to use have a look at similar refiners
- Choose the Refiner sort type - either "By number of results" or "Alphabetical"
- Choose the Sort order - ascending or descending
- Finally we have two checkboxes for certain behaviours - "Expand filter by default" and "Show filter for refinement values" - generally these can be left blank.
Once you have configured your new refiner(s) scroll down below the refiners table in the panel and click Save at the bottom:
Styling options
Under Styling options you can specify a Web part title. By default there will be no title shown, but if you are showing the Filters above the In Focus web part they are connected to you may prefer to populate the title above the Filters rather than above the In Focus web part.
Next you can choose whether to show the web part if there are no results (Show blank if no result), and lastly you can choose the Layout for the filters - Vertical, Horizontal or Panel. You can choose whichever fits best within the layout of the page.
