Atlas has several ways of producing an image thumbnail for workspaces depending on where links to these are held within the page settings. These images could be displayed within web-parts (such as in-focus tiles) or tools (such as ConneX logos). However, the experience within Microsoft may have led to inconsistent experiences across your tenant which could have gone unnoticed, and across our various client deployments of Atlas, with Microsoft utilising different sources for the images across different tenants.
This article will aim to provide insight into the differences between site ‘logo’ and site ‘thumbnail and which one should be used and why, as well as provide instructions for how users should now upload and select a thumbnail image to be displayed as tiles within in-focus web-part.
This only affects landing pages and workspaces.

Microsoft was, in some circumstances, using the logo for In Focus thumbnails. The syllables from the title of the Workspace were being displayed instead of the image (see Workspace 1(w/logo)). The logo is updated under Settings>Change the look.
To prevent this, we have made a change where we ensure that Atlas uses the thumbnail image.
Thumbnails are updated under Workspace>page details.
Below we have illustrated that it is possible to have 3 different experiences. To avoid this, you should as best practice upload a thumbnail image as soon as the workspace is provisioned.
Workspace 1 (w/logo) - The name of this Workspace is Chase Team. MS has picked up first character from the first and second word of the title (CT) and inserted it as an OOTB site 'logo'.
Workspace 2 (w/placeholder, no thumbnail) – Image cannot be loaded, image replaced with a placeholder. It is not utilising the site logo
Workspace 3 (with thumbnail) – Thumbnail has been picked up from Page Details (as expected).
For content where the image cannot be loaded for some reason or does not exist, the image will be replaced with a placeholder, for example:
