Warning: As of April 2023 Microsoft have deprecated the ability to apply custom ordering through the classic UI, but have not introduced this configuration to the Modern UI beyond the top level of each term set. As a result, it is currently not possible to set the order for the sub-menu levels. This is not something that ClearPeople can control so please raise this with Microsoft. We hope this functionality will be restored soon.
Introduction
Apart from the look and feel, Modern SharePoint provides a wealth of improvements. However some admin tasks require Modern SharePoint Admins to revert to the classic UI. One such task is the customisation of the Global Navigation menu to display in the order you prefer rather than the default alphabetical listing.
Method
From the Term Store Modern UI, click Return to classic in the top right of the page:
After the page reloads, you can open the Global Navigation terms:
Taxonomy > Atlas Navigation> Global Navigation > *
Select the parent of the terms you wish to apply a custom sort order to, then in the right hand panel click the Custom Sort tab:
In the right panel we are now presented with a list of child navigation terms available for the Parent navigation term, (in this example, we can see from the screenshot that we are custom sorting the terms available under the Department term) and a means of amending the sort order.
Choose Use custom sort order then use the number dropdowns to set the order you need:
Once you are happy with your changes, click Save. Once saved, you can close this browser screen.
NOTE: In order for users to see your applied changes, they will need to clear their Atlas Cache.
